Ever tried explaining mindfulness to kids? It usually goes something like this:
“Mindfulness is being present in the moment.”
“But what if the moment stinks?”
“Well… you just notice it and accept it.”
“So if I drop my ice cream, I should accept it instead of launching a full-scale meltdown?”
“Um… ideally?”
Mindfulness is noticing what’s happening right now—what you see, hear, feel, smell, and taste.
It’s realizing that life is a series of nows, and each one is a fleeting little miracle (even if that miracle involves stepping on a Lego).
Which brings us to Jerry—the hero (?) of this week’s Majik Kids story, Happy New Now!
Jerry is a gentleman (very gentle—like, “would apologize to a chair for bumping into it” gentle), but he has one problem: He HATES the present moment. He’s always wishing for a better now—a perfect now where his coffee is always hot, his toast never burns, and the universe personally guarantees his happiness.
So, like any logical person, he tries to build a perfect Now Machine™ (patent pending) to capture and replay the best moments of his life. Spoiler alert: It doesn’t work.
Instead, Jerry learns that the key to happiness isn’t chasing a new now or clinging to the perfect then, but simply embracing the now he’s got.
Because let’s face it, this now is the only one we’ve got—and if we don’t learn to love it, we’ll miss it entirely.
This playful rhyming tale is perfect for teaching kids (and maybe some grown-ups ) the magic of being present. So gather your little ones, snuggle up, and take a joyful leap into the Now!
We also have a meditation you can do with your children to teach them to be here, in the now, and help them focus on one breath, sound, thought or sensation at a time.
Who knows, this may be the perfect medicine for you too (probably is).
Practicing how to keep their mind in the present moment and to feel safe in the process is such a beautiful gift to learn at a young age. Many grown-ups don’t learn this until much much later in life.
