Do you want to raise a generation of environmental leaders who love, respect and protect our natural environments?
This week’s story, “The Little Green Fairy”, is a wake-up call for little nature lovers and protectors. Through following forest fairies looking for their pet insects gone missing, children learn about the importance of pollinators and soil organisms in the forest ecosystem, and how their demise is linked to ours as well.
Teaching your children about the magic of nature is easy – especially when it comes to giant trees and cool animals – but teaching them to love insects is just as important.
Insects are disappearing at an alarming rate due to habitat loss, declining biodiversity, insecticide and pesticide use, and competition with invasive species, among other reasons.
Here are some ideas of how you can lead by example and show your kid how to care:
- Spend time outside: get your kids playing outside and exploring nature. Feed their fascination with discovering how everything is connected.
- Turn your lawn into a wildflower meadow to attract a variety of insects.
- Carefully take spiders outside your home instead of killing them, their lives are precious too!
- Learn to garden together: tending to plants and starting a compost pile are great ways to talk about soil microorganisms, worms, nutrients, seeds, and how they contribute to a healthy plant.
- Save resources: turn off the lights to save electricity, turn off the tap when brushing teeth to save water, etc.
- Donate clothing and toys you no longer use, normalize getting second-hand items and swapping toys with friends.
- Participate in a beach or riverbank cleanup!
- Include your child in recycling and sorting recyclables.
